What planer for wet and dry wood?

In this article, we present you the differences between a wet wood planer and a dry wood planer.
Carpenters often face the dilemma of choosing a machine tool for their plant. Consequently, they ask themselves the following questions:
What planer to buy for wet wood?
What type for dry wood?
Can you buy one machine that will process both types of wood?
We answer these questions below.

At the very beginning, we will start with what a planer is at all?

A planer is a basic machine that should be included in the equipment of every carpentry workshop. They are used to zestrugiwania a layer of material with a knife shaft. Depending on the needs of the plants, they are:

  • one-sided - have one planing shaft, material processing on one side - thicknessers.
  • two-sided - two planing shafts (top and bottom), processing on both sides of the element simultaneously - double-sided thicknessers, double-sided planers.
  • three-sided - three planing spindles (most often the planing shaft from the top and two side heads, mounted at the back of the machine), processing of three sides of the material - three-sided thicknessers, three-sided planers.
  • four-sided - 4 planing heads or more, material processing on four sides in one work cycle. In this type of machine tools, you can simultaneously wink and mill the processed material, thanks to which we immediately get the finished element - four-sided planers.

What wet wood planer?

For rough, wet and damp wood we offer a solid and durable machine, which is primarily characterized by a strong structure (preferably a body made of cast iron), with high technical parameters. The main and the most important element in this type of processing is the pulling shaft located in the table top. Usually there are several of them and they are metal, toothed, and torsion. These shafts are driven by electric motors. They can have several types of feedrate.
Thanks to the use of this element, the wet material easily moves along the table towards the planing shaft, being processed.
Planers with pulling shafts in the table are mainly used in sawmills, where raw wood is processed, coming directly from the forest.

What dry wood planer?

Unlike planing raw material, when working with dry wood, the machine does not need rollers in the table top, as the material easily glides over the table. The material is not too heavy, so you can use a carpentry machine of smaller parameters with smaller motors, speeds, etc.

Can I purchase one machine to plan both types of wood?

Definitely yes. When you decide to buy a wet wood planer, you can easily process both types of material, both wet and dry, on it. It is enough for the planer to have adjustable rollers in the table top. When wet wood is processed on the planer, the rollers are positioned so that they protrude above the table. When planing dry workpieces, these rollers can be lowered so that they do not protrude beyond the worktop.

Typically, wet wood machines having pull rollers in the table top are more expensive than dry wood machines due to the additional equipment.

The above information should help you choose the right planer for your plant. Sometimes it is worth spending more time choosing the machine that is most suitable and best suited to your needs. The choice of machines depends on the specifics of the plant. Below are some planer proposals:
